About Knowlton Values

In 1966, Kenneth Knowlton is credited with creating ASCII art. Inspired by the limitations, I created a font created specifically for ASCII art! Utilizing more expressive forms, I created Knowlton Values. This kind of ASCII art requires a monospace font to work. I took it a step further and made my monospaced font perfectly square. This makes the translation from a pixel to a glyph even smoother! The secret is in the glyph’s volume. Starting at A, every letter lost about 3.8% of its volume to create a subtle transition of values. The classic string of characters used, “Ñ@W$987654321!abc;:+-,._ ”, creates a less than ideal outcome with overlapping and clunky transitions. Knowlton Values simply needs A-Z to perfectly translate an image to Latin forms. Afterall, a picture is worth more than 1,000 words!

As a photographer, I have since fallen in love with this font. The combination of my two interests (type and photos) is extremely fun to work with. This is just one of those fonts that if you give it the chance, it creates a feel all on it’s own. I cannot recommend this more to experimental designers that love typography and photography!

This purchase comes with the Knowlton Values font, an easy and comprehensive user guide, and an End User License Agreement for the Fusion Type foundry.
